Their parents had struggled to educate them throughout the high school. Poverty was the main hindrance the Jamaican and the Puerto Rican states. As a result of poverty, both their parents could not afford to educate their children up to the university level.Poverty was prevalent in the Puerto Rican society, Beatrice was lucky enough to have completed high school compared to his peers without challenges. The only problem that she encountered is that she couldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬t find the work to do, (Sunshine Warner). The only thing she could do was to get married and later accompanied his husband to the United States where he had gone earlier. She saw it as the best option where she could try out to eke a living in New York because of the many opportunities a vailable compared to her hometown.The U.S government had arranged the recruitment of the Jamaican citizens just after the World War II. This was an excellent opportunity for George to find work in the America. After he finished eighth grade and doing tailoring course, his father could not afford to educate him through the university. The recruitment of the Jamaicans for the tobacco plantations was the best avenue in which he could find job and travel to America. Although they had to face hardships and problems while moving he just had to persevere.In the United States, Beatrice did work immediately she arrived. She had to take care of the kids until they were old enough then she could find the job. El Barrio, where they settled in the United States was a settlement of mixed cultures of which many of them were immigrants. English was the primary language spoken. Beatrice had to learn the language so that she could converse well with the neighbors. After a short period of interaction she was able to talk and they could mingle freely.According to George`s case, life was a bit tough compared to that of Beatrice. While travelling, the conditions were unbearable and risky but they had to manage. There was no enough food and fresh water. They just survived on a small sandwich that they were supposed to eat a piece in the morning and the rest in the afternoon. As a result many got sick. The pay was also so little which had to be divided severally despite being overworked. (Flores)Prejudice was a prevalent case in the areas that both George and Beatrice settled. George and his batch were the first black people to occupy the area, so they were discriminated against and they could not mix with the white.
